Gradey’s plant nursery, The Medicine Garden, is offering a Community-Supported Herb Share again this year! From the Medicine Garden website:
Our goal in creating this CSH is to offer our community fresh medicinal plants gathered at their optimal harvest time and with the deepest respect, so that you and yours will be empowered to navigate most common illness. Our goal is to provide a year’s supply of medicine of each plant, and a well-rounded medicinary by the end of the season. Our small scale approach allows us to sink into the needs of the plants as well as our communities.
How it works
Similar to how a vegetable CSA works, each month you will pick up your share. This includes 4 fresh plants to take home for medicine making, a 2-hour community gathering/class to get the creative juices flowing, one medicinal preparation such as a tincture or salve, and our inspiring newsletter. Plants are grown organically at our farm in Oregon City and in SE Portland. A few medicinal natives will be ethically harvested to round out your medicinary.
To help you visualize the amount of plants you will receive each month, imagine a quart jar of plant matter for each of the four monthly plants. Also a fifth plant will be made into medicine, either by us ahead of time (some plants like arnica have a very small shelf life fresh) or as a component of the community gathering/class.
At each pick-up from 6:30 to 8:30pm, we will spend our time helping you become acquainted with the friends you will bring home. Topics may include hands-on medicine making, medicinal plant gardening, or a general wellness topic. (Class topics will largely be left up to members.)
By the conclusion of the season, members will have a well-stocked medicinary of over 30 plants that cover most common health concerns.
Gathering the Harvest
Pickups occur monthly on the following Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 in Portland. Location given upon registration.
