Join Gradey & Missy as we delve into the medicines and practices of the season. Our outdoor classes will look for the clues available even in the depths of winter: How can we identify a tree by its bark and buds? What do the trees and shrubs tell us about the landscape? How do the patterns that emerge guide our practices as herbalists? We will wildcraft where appropriate and tend where we can, discussing ethics and reciprocity along the way.
Our indoor classroom days will cover some of the fundamental concepts in herbalism, delving into basic phytochemistry and organoleptics by using our senses to learn about plants. We’ll also address the health concerns of the dark months, covering herbs for immune support and examining how to choose the right remedy for each condition. In the kitchen, we’ll get hands-on, learning how to make fresh-plant tinctures, effective teas, and tasty remedies for the whole household.
This course is one block of the Saturday Herbalism Mini-Series. Each 4-week intensive, offered every other month, includes two full-day field trips led by Gradey Proctor and two hands-on classroom days taught by Missy Rohs, for a combination of nature immersion, medicine-making, lecture, discussion, and sensory learning.
